Powers and Functions of the Academic Council—

1. The Academic Council shall, subject to provisions of this Act and the Statutes, have the power by regulations of prescribing all courses of study and determining curricula, and shall have control on teaching and other educational programmes within the University, and shall be responsible for the maintenance of standards thereof.
2. It shall have power to make regulations consistent with this Act and the Statutes relating to all academic matters subject to its control and to amend or repeal such regulations.
3. In particular, and without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing power, the Academic Council shall have power:-

1. 1. To advise the Board and Vice-Chancellor on all academic matters.
   2. To make recommendation regarding teaching, research and extension education.
   3. To make recommendations for the institution of Professorships, Associate Professorships, Assistant Professorships and other teaching posts including posts in research and extension education and in regard to the duties thereof.
   4. To make recommendations for adjunct professorship.
   5. To make recommendations for the establishment/amalgamation/abolition of Faculty College, Department of teaching, research and extension education.
   6. To make regulations regarding the admission of students to the university, and determine the number of students to be admitted.
   7. To make regulations relating to the courses of study leading to degrees, diplomas and certificates.
   8. To make regulations relating to the conduct of examinations and to maintain and improve standards of education.
   9. To make recommendations to the Board regarding conferment of honorary degree.
   10. To make recommendations regarding the qualifications to be prescribed for teachers in the University.
   11. To exercise such other powers and perform such other functions as may be conferred or imposed on it under the provisions of this Act, by the Board or Vice-Chancellor.

In addition to its powers and functions as specified in Sub-section (1), (2) & (3) of Section 14 of the Act, the Academic Council shall have the following powers:

1. 1. to initiate measures for improving the quality of teaching and teachers, student evaluation and student advisory service;
   2. to assess the examination of the courses of studies and degree of other Universities and to recommend to the Board of Management for their recognition;
   3. to recommend from time to time measures for the integration of (i) inter: Faculty teaching programmes and (ii) teaching, research and extension education in each Faculty, for the most effective utilization of available resources;
   4. to recommend to the Board of Management the candidates for University certificates, diplomas, degrees and other academic distinctions;
   5. to recommend regulations for (i) the award of scholarships, fellowships, medals and other prizes; (ii) the conduct of convocation, and (iii) maintenance and improvement of discipline amongst the students to the Board of Management; and
   6. to consider any other academic matter.
