School Adoption

Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour adopted the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Sabour (Type-I) on the eve of the 7th Convocation of the University in April, 2023. The school is a girls’ residential Middle School (Classes VI to VIII) with a capacity of 100 girl students who come from the below poverty level.

Mission

Adoption of a local school and create awareness among the young students about agricultural education.

Vision

Upliftment of the society has been one of the aims of the university and adoption of the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Sabour (Type-I) is a step towards the same. The university is bent on development of the girl students of the school and also create awareness among them regarding the benefits of agriculture and agricultural education to groom them to agri-scientists of tomorrow.

The Team

With the vision of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the university, Dr. D.R. Singh, and guidance of Madam Vice Chancellor Mrs. Pratima Singh, a team of lady scientists led by Dr. Kiran Kumari comprising of Dr. Ruby Rani, Mrs. Anita Kumari, Dr. Shirin Akhtar, Dr. Suborna Roychoudhuri and Dr. Deepti Singh have been working for the improvement of the school girls with the help of their able teachers Mrs. Priyanka and Mrs. Rani Kumari.

Social service activities
Fruit Tree Plantation for Development of Nutri Garden

Plantation of various fruit trees like Mango, Guava, Lemon, were done at the premises of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (Type I) by Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour on 08.04.2023. The occasion was graced by the valuable presence of Dr. P.K.Singh, Director Research, Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Director Students Welfare, Dr. R.P.Sharma, Dean (Ag)-cum-Dean(PG), Dr. Randhir Kumar, Vegetable scientist. Nutri-garden will be a rich source of nutrition for those school students and creates awareness about the crops with high nutritive values. This garden can enhance dietary diversity by providing micronutrients through constant supply of fruits and vegetables. It is also a low cost sustainable approach for reducing mal-nutrition by supplying balance diets.

Participation in 7th Convocation of Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour

For all-round development of the students and also for encouraging them towards agriculture education system, twenty (20) selected school students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (Type I) were invited to participate in the 7th Convocation of Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour on 11.04.2023, presided over by His Excellency the Governor of Bihar Shri Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, in the majestic presence of Shri Sarvjeet, Honorable Agricultural Minister, Government of Bihar, Dr. A.K. Singh, Deputy Director Horticulture, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi and Dr. D.R. Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour. The School uniforms, Educational kits were distributed to them by Hon’ble Governor of Bihar and Chancellor of Bihar Agricultural University, Shri Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at this occasion. They witnessed the whole convocation programme and also participated in the cultural programme held in the same day evening.

Celebration of Ambedkar Jayanti

132nd birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was celebrated on 14th April, 2023 at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (Type I) by the University officials along with the school students. A special assembly was organised with songs, recitation, speech and prayers by the students to pay tribute to Dr. Ambedkar. The speakers described Dr. Ambedkar’s contribution towards the human rights, justice and equality in Indian Society.

Awareness Programme on Mal Nutrition

Awareness Programme on Mal Nutrition was conducted on 20.04.2023 to promote consciousness on disease free healthy lifeat Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (Type I). The programme was organised to spread awareness about the importance of healthful diets for combating against mal nutrition. The programme detailed about the symptoms of mal nutrition and their preventive measures.

Birth Day Celebration & Awareness Programme on Agricultural Education

Birthday celebration of school students for the month of April,2023 was planned along with Awareness programme on Agricultural Education on 28.04.2023at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (Type I). The occasion was graced by the presence of Madam Vice-Chancellor, the First Lady of the University, Mrs Pratima Singh. The rituals of Cake cutting and blowing out candles were done by the four (4) birthday girls in the presence of Madam Vice-Chancellor. The students of the school were blessed with indoor games equipments and other educational kits by Madam Vice Chancellor. Besides, for promoting agricultural education and encouraging students towards agricultural education, informative speech, delightful conversation and short quiz on Agricultural crops and practices were also conducted at this programme.

Mother’s Day Celebration

The Mother’s Day was celebrated on 14th May, 2023 (second Sunday of May) at the Miniauditorium of BAU, Sabour,in the graceful presence of Madam Vice Chancellor Mrs. Pratima Singh, where 25 school girls, the girl students of BAU, Sabour and lady scientists participated. All shared their emotions about mother in form of speeches, songs and recitations.

World Bee Day Celebration

The World Bee Day was celebrated at the BAU, Sabour campus on 20th May, 2023 to mark the importance of bees, the most important pollinators of agricultural crops. Twenty six school students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (Type I), Sabour were invited and were informed about the importance of bees in agriculture and food system. They also visited the Honey processing plant and were explained about the process of collection, processing and packaging of honey.

National Anti-terrorism Day Celebration

The National Anti-terrorism Day was celebrated on 21st May, 2023 at the BAU, Sabour campus. The Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (Type I), Sabour students participated in the programme that consisted of “Prabhat Pheri” with anti-terrorism related slogans.

Awareness programme on health benefits of seasonal fruits and their value addition

An awareness programme on health benefits of seasonal fruits and their value addition was carried out at the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (Type I), Sabour under the gracious presence of Mrs. Pratima Singh, Madam Vice Chancellor. The students were made aware about the nutritional benefits of seasonal fruits like mango and litchi and also their medicinal value and how they could be preserved and their value addition done.

Celebration of World Tobacco Prohibition Day

The World Tobacco Prohibition Day was celebrated at BAU, Sabour on 31st May, 2023. The school girls were invited in the programme and were made ware about the ill effects of tobacco. They also shared their thoughts on tobacco prohibition.

Celebration of World Environment Day

The World Environment Day was celebrated at KVK, Sabour on 5th June, 2023. The students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (Type I), Sabour along with their teachers participated in the programme which consisted of tree plantation.

Participation in Workshop on Environmental Protection and Awareness

The students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (Type I), Sabour participated in the one week long Workshop on Environmental Protection and Awareness held on 5-11 June, 2023 at BAU, Sabour. The students delivered speech, participated in the parthenium eradication programme, beat plastic campaign, plantation programme, mock drills for earthquake and fire fighting, drawing competition, as well as in waste to wealth model presentation. The students were applauded for their good presentations and also awarded.

Establishment of nutri-garden and plantation of Kharif vegetables

For eradication of mal-nutrition, nutri-garden is an essential component which should be set up in the premises of our homes and also in institutions and schools. Aiming at this, a nutri-garden has been established in the school premises. Seasonal vegetables will be planted year-round in the garden for supply of fresh vegetables enriched with nutrients. On 28th June, plantation of Kharif vegetables in the nutri-garden was initiated with planting okra, cowpea and cucurbitaceous vegetables, which was done by the students of the school under the guidance of the team of lady scientists of BAU, Sabour. The school students were also made aware of the various cropping seasons for agricultural crops and nutritional benefits of vegetables.

Training on preparation of bookmark

As flowers become dry, they become waste. These flowers can be collected and dried to make many decorative items including greeting cards, bookmarks, sceneries, etc. A training was imparted to the students of KGBV, Sabour on 15.07.2023 for bookmark preparation using dry flowers. They were taught the process of flower collection, drying, pasting as well as making sketches. The students enjoyed the training and showed enthusiastic response towards the programme.

Celebration of 95th ICAR Foundation Day at KVK, Sabour

The 95th ICAR Foundation Day was celebrated at the KVK, Sabour on 16th July, 2023 with Technology Awareness programme where various agricultural technologies were exhibited. The students of KGBV, Sabour attended the programme and enriched their knowledge on different efficient agricultural technologies.

Quiz competition at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Sabour (Type-I)

A quiz competition among the students of different classes of the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Sabour (Type-I) was organised on 31st July, 2023. All the students were divided into eight groups for the quiz. Group-II comprising of Komal Kumari, Satya Kumari, Kalpana Kumari, Mausam Kumari, Gunjan Kumari, Anshu Kumari (Class VIII), Shabnam Kumari, Anshu Kumari (Class VI), Suman Kumari, Arushi Kumari, Madhu Kumari were the winners. The Group III comprising of Neha Kumari, Nandani Kumari, Beauty Kumari, Sonali Kumari, Meenu Kumari, Khushbu Kumari, Rimjhim Kumari, Lakshmi Kumari, Anita Kumari, Puja Kumari, Anita Kumari, Reeta Kumari were the runners-up. The winning team was awarded by gifts. The winners and runners up teams will be felicitated during the 14th Foundation Day on 5th August, 2023. At the end of the programme every student was gifted a notebook, pen, chart paper, cellophane sheet, fevicol, etc. for performing various extra-curricular activities.

Development of nutri-garden related activities

The nutritional garden at the campus of the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Sabour (Type-I) is being developed. The previously planted crops are in lush green vegetative stage. Further, drumstick plants were provided to the students for plantation, which they planted themselves by lay out of plot, digging pits followed by planting. The students have developed interest in gardening activities and enthusiastically carrying out various activities for developing the nutri-garden.

Foundation Day Celebration at BAU, Sabour

The 14th Foundation Day of BAU, Sabour was celebrated on 5th August, 2023. Twenty-two school girls of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Sabour (Type-I) participated in the programme along with their teachers Mrs. Priyanka and Mrs. Rani Kumari. The winners and runners-up of the quiz competition held on 31st July, 2023 were awarded with certificates that they received from Mr. S.K. Aggrawal, Hon’ble Agriculture Secretary of Bihar and Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Dr. D.R. Singh. The teachers of the school Mrs. Priyanka and Mrs. Rani Kumari as well as the lady scientists associated with the school adoption programme, Dr. Kiran Kumari, Dr. Ruby Rani, Mrs. Anita Kumari, Dr. Shirin Akhtar, Dr. Suborna Roy Choudhury and Dr. Deepti Singh were felicitated on the occasion.

Technology Week to Commemorate Foundation Day at BAU, Sabour

To commemorate the Foundation Day of BAU, Sabour Technology Week was celebrated from 2nd to 8th August, 2023. School students of various schools visited the university to observe the various units running under BAU, Sabour on each day. On the fifth day of this Technology Week (i.e., 6th August, 2023), 92 school girls of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Sabour (Type-I) along with their teachers Mrs. Priyanka and Mrs. Rani Kumari visited different units of BAU, Sabour and gained knowledge on different agricultural technologies from the scientists. The programme was co-ordinated by Mrs. Anita Kumari, Senior Scientist cum Head of KVK, Sabour. The students visited the Honey Processing Unit, Hydroponic Unit, Vermicomposting Unit, Horticulture Garden, Integrated Farming System of the KVK, Sabour, Botanical Garden, Biofertilizer Unit, Tissue Culture Laboratory, Food Development Centre, Media Centre, etc. and were enriched with knowledge on new technologies of agricultural science. The students also got a glimpse of the activities of BAU, Sabour through Safarnama at the Mini auditorium of the university, where the students also interacted with scientists. Dr. Sunil Kumar, Assistant Professor, Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry told them about various activities of BAU, Sabour. Dean (Agriculture) Dr. A.K. Sah also interacted with the students and urged them to be steady about their goals and study hard to achieve them.

Celebration of Parthenium Awareness Week organised by KVK Sabour

The Parthenium Awareness Week was organised by KVK Sabour between 16-22 August, 2023. The notorious weed is a major threat for agricultural and other crops and is spread over 35 million hectares of cropped and non-cropped areas. Parthenium has adverse effects on health of animals as well as human beings and causes asthma, bronchitis and other health problems. The weed spreads very fast and hampers crop production. The week long activity consisted of awareness of the farmers and RAWE students about the ill effects of the weed by Mrs. Anita Kumari, Senior Scientist-cum-Head of KVK, Sabour, eradication of the weed in the KVK, Sabour premises, the BAU, Sabour campus, the nearby markets and residential areas, the adopted school Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Sabour, besides the adopted villages Gorra and Goradih. The students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Sabour (Type-I) were also made aware about the hazards of Parthenium and the school premises were made free of the notorious weed.

Planting of More Kharif Crops in Nutri-Garden

More kharif crops were planted in the nutri-garden of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Sabour which included brinjal and cauliflower. The students enthusiastically did the layout and planting all by themselves under the guidance of the team of scientists and their teachers. It has been observed that the school girls have developed a liking for gardening.

Training on preparation of greeting card

Waste to wealth is the mantra in today’s world. Flowers and foliage eventually dry and become waste. These flowers can be collected and dried to make many decorative items including greeting cards, bookmarks, sceneries, etc. A training on greeting card preparation using dry flowers was imparted to the students of KGBV, Sabour on 2nd September, 2023. They were taught the process of flower collection, drying, pasting as well as making sketches earlier when they were taught bookmark preparation in July, 2023. They were again reminded the same and taught the intricacies of greeting card making. The students enjoyed the training and showed positive response towards the programme. Later on, they were enthusiastically engaged in making greeting cards for the upcoming Teacher’s Day.

The students of KGBV, Sabour learnt how to make greeting cards with dry flowers, foliage and waste materials last week and on Teacher’s Day (i.e. 5th Spetember, 2023), they gifted cards prepared by themselves to Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, BAU, Sabour, Dr. D.R. Singh at the university as well as District Magistrate Mr. Subrat Kumar Sen at a programme organised at Town Hall, Bhagalpur to celebrate Teacher’s Day. It is a matter of immense pride for BAU, Sabour how these girls have mastered the art of card making so fast under the able guidance of the team of scientists from BAU, Sabour and their teachers.
